Friends are volunteers dedicated to enhancing library services, equipment, and programs not normally provided by public funding. Friends provide financial support through membership fees, donations, book sale earnings, and special events. Friends also volunteer in the library.

Founded in 1990 the Federation of Friends of the DC Public Library is the membership organization for the communitybased Friends groups that support their local branches. The Federation and Friends groups are strong advocates for DC Public Library services programs facilities and funding at the community level and before the DC City Council and Mayors Office. The DC Public Library was named a 2024 recipient of theInstitute of Museum and Library ServicesNational Medal for Museum and Library Service.
