The Batavia Historical Society is a nonprofit organization based in Batavia, Kane County, Illinois. Founded on November 17, 1959, by a group of 22 individuals dedicated to preserving the local history, the society formally established itself on January 17, 1960. The mission of the society remains consistent with its original goals: the discovery, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge about the history of Batavia and surrounding areas.

Mission and Activities

  • Preservation and Collection: The society focuses on collecting and preserving historical items such as books, pamphlets, papers, photographs, and relics. It also acquires properties and other historical artifacts through gifts, grants, and purchases.

  • Publications and Meetings: The society publishes historical material in various formats and conducts meetings featuring lectures and discussions to foster a deeper understanding of local history.
  • Exhibitions and Education: Through its partnership with the Batavia Park District, the society maintains the Batavia Depot Museum, which stores and displays artifacts collected since its inception. The museum serves as a hub for educational and leisure activities, offering insights into Batavia's industrial heritage and notable residents.

Facilities and Collections

The Depot Museum is housed in a historic railroad station built by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, highlighting the town's role in the regional railroad network. The museum showcases exhibits that cover various aspects of Batavia’s history, from its early industrial roots to its role in the broader historical context of the region.

Research Center

The society operates the Gustafson Research Center, which houses extensive archives, including documents, photographs, and a significant collection of old court records from Kane County. These resources are available for public research, particularly benefiting those conducting family history studies.

Membership and Growth

From an initial group of 45 founding members in 1960, the society has grown to over 550 members today. This substantial growth reflects its commitment to preserving local history for future generations.

Community Engagement

Recent initiatives include placing historic plaques along the Riverwalk, highlighting the town's past and its restored landmarks like the windmills. The society continues to seek donations of historical artifacts to expand its exhibits and collections.

Overall, the Batavia Historical Society plays a vital role in preserving and promoting the rich history of Batavia, Illinois, making it an important resource for both local residents and those interested in regional history.
