Artists Along the Bitterroot

Overview

Artists Along the Bitterroot (AAB) is a non-profit organization located in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana. Established in 2008, AAB aims to promote public awareness and understanding of local artists and fine artisans by providing opportunities for the community to engage with the visual arts.

Founding and Mission

The idea for AAB began with a conversation between two artists, Bobbie McKibbin and Barbara Michelman, who sought to sell their work directly from their studios to the public while enhancing public engagement with the visual arts. Soon, they were joined by other like-minded artists, including Cynthie Fisher, Art Norby, Ed Wolf, and Kathleen Sheard. Together, they founded AAB to foster a closer relationship between the public and local artists.

AAB's mission is to encourage public awareness of artists and fine art artisans living in the Bitterroot Valley by offering a varied art experience to the community and visitors.

Programs and Activities

One of the primary activities of AAB is the organization of Studio Tours & Art Sales, which occur twice annually. During these events, participants can visit studios across the valley, from Lolo to Darby, to observe demonstrations and purchase artworks. These events are free and open to all ages, providing a unique opportunity to interact with local artists and observe their creative processes firsthand.

In addition to studio tours, AAB members also offer a variety of workshops open to the public. These workshops serve as an educational platform to further engage the community with the arts.

Artists' studios are generally open year-round by appointment for those unable to attend during the scheduled tour dates, ensuring ongoing accessibility to the public.

Growth and Development

AAB has grown to include over 30 artists working in a diverse range of mediums, such as paint, pastel, clay, glass, leather, and photography. The organization received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 2014, marking a significant milestone in its development.

The organization continues to expand its outreach efforts through enhanced promotional campaigns, including print and radio advertising, and direct mail campaigns. This growth has helped establish AAB's Studio Tour as a "destination event," benefiting both the organization and the broader local community by increasing public participation and understanding of the visual arts.

Legacy

Artists Along the Bitterroot plays a vital role in fostering an appreciation for local art and artisans within the Bitterroot Valley. By bridging the gap between artists and their audience, AAB contributes to a vibrant cultural landscape that enriches the lives of both residents and visitors.
