Association for Childhood Education International
The Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI), now known as Childhood Education International, is a nonprofit education organization founded on the principles established by the International Kindergarten Union in 1892. It evolved into its current form through a merger with the National Council of Primary Education in 1931. ACEI was formally renamed in February 2019[1].
Overview
ACEI was a global community of educators, advocates, parents, and other stakeholders committed to ensuring that children have access to quality educational experiences. The organization focused on promoting desirable conditions and practices affecting children from infancy through adulthood[1][4].
History
Established as the International Kindergarten Union by educators concerned with professional kindergarten teacher preparation, ACEI expanded its scope by merging with the National Council of Primary Education in 1931. The addition of "International" to its name in 1946 reflected its global focus[1].
During its history, ACEI supported various educational initiatives, including providing assistance to immigrant communities in the United States, helping refugee children in France after World War I, and contributing to educational materials during the Great Depression and World War II. Notably, ACEI promoted racial equality in the 1950s by ensuring equal access for African American members to its events and resources[1].
In the 1960s, ACEI collaborated with U.S. organizations to develop training for Project Head Start, aiming to prepare young children from low-income backgrounds for school[1].
Mission and Activities
ACEI aimed to foster innovation in education and inspire actions that create sustainable futures for children worldwide. It emphasized the importance of providing stimulating learning environments that equip children with 21st-century skills[3]. The organization supported education during crises such as migration and emergencies and advocated for inclusive education, education for sustainable development, and child rights[2].
Publications
ACEI published two significant journals:
- Childhood Education: Innovations, first published in 1924, featuring innovative educational practices and perspectives[1].
- Journal of Research in Childhood Education, a quarterly publication offering peer-reviewed articles on childhood education research[1].
International Recognition
ACEI held consultative status at the United Nations and was involved with initiatives such as the NGO Committee on UNICEF. It collaborated on projects like the "Global Guidelines for Early Childhood Education and Care in the 21st Century" to enhance early care environments worldwide[1].

CE International's Katherine Tek and Yvette Gatilao Murphy recently traveled to India to support work on an education technology project. We're proud to be collaborating with Trickle Up to develop a global coaching curriculum and mobile application to support their work alleviating extreme poverty and strengthening women's economic empowerment and inclusion. They are conducting field testing with Trickle Up communities in India to observe and analyze the application and its content.
