This deal is a PR stunt, not a pathway. 1. According to Reichlen-Melnick, leaving the country without fighting your case in immigration court can make things worse—especially if you’re already in removal proceedings— since leaving the country often counts as abandoning your application. 2. Homeland Security has not confirmed close coordination with immigration courts, meaning people who self-deport may be forfeiting their asylum claims entirely. So while Trump claims self-deportation is a way for migrants to legally return to the US, it doesn’t actually work that way. 3.
