Muslim Advocates
Overview
Muslim Advocates is a U.S. nonprofit organization that functions as a national civil rights advocate for Muslim communities. Designated as a 501(c)(3) organization, it primarily operates in the areas of civil rights, social action, and advocacy, with a focus on intergroup and race relations[2]. The organization was founded in 2005 in response to the USA Patriot Act, which it claims led to widespread surveillance and discrimination against Muslim Americans[1][3].
Mission and Activities
The core mission of Muslim Advocates is to combat systemic anti-Muslim discrimination through strategic litigation, advocacy, legislative engagement, and public education[3]. It works closely with social movements and coalitions to address issues such as surveillance, discriminatory law enforcement practices, over-incarceration, and the repression of dissent[3]. By leveraging coalitional advocacy and amplifying the work of organizers, Muslim Advocates aims to protect the rights and promote the interests of Muslim communities across the United States[3].
Leadership and Governance
The organization is led by an executive team, with Omar Farah serving as the Executive Director following recent changes in leadership[3]. Farhana Khera has previously held key roles, including serving as President and Executive Director[2]. The board of directors includes several prominent figures from diverse backgrounds, contributing to the organization's governance and strategic direction[4].
Funding and Financials
Muslim Advocates relies heavily on contributions, grants, and gifts for its operations[1]. The organization has received significant funding from major private foundations such as the Ford Foundation, W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and Open Society Foundations[1]. In recent years, the financial performance of Muslim Advocates has varied, with revenues reaching approximately $5.8 million in 2017 and declining to around $1.9 million in 2019[1].
Policy and Legal Work
The legal team at Muslim Advocates is focused on developing and managing a litigation docket that addresses various forms of anti-Muslim targeting. The organization collaborates with other legal organizations and stakeholders to build strong litigation strategies and advocate for policy changes[3]. This work involves not only legal action but also public education and strategic communications to challenge oppressive narratives and amplify Muslim voices in the public discourse[3].
Reception and Impact
Despite its impact in advocating for Muslim civil rights, Muslim Advocates operates within a complex financial and regulatory environment, as noted by Charity Navigator and other nonprofit evaluators[5]. The organization's commitment to equity and social justice continues to drive its growth and strategy[3].

On May 15, the Senate voted on a resolution demanding the Trump administration produce a report outlining any steps it’s taking to comply with court orders demanding the return of US citizens or residents disappeared to El Salvador; stating whether US security assistance is being used in disappearances, rendition or imprisonment; and assessing El Salvador’s human rights record, including allegations of torture in its mass prisons. The resolution could have cut off security assistance to El Salvador if the administration failed to produce the report. On a party-line vote, the measure failed 50-45. (fb)

Check out this new piece from journalist Arwa Mahdawi for @guardian_us, in which she addresses the possibility of viewpoint-based scrutiny of people entering or reentering the U.S. from abroad. In the piece, our legal director, Golnaz Fakhimi, chimes in to flag the foresight and weighing that people can consider—understanding that, for many people, the importance of remaining visible and vocal about core political views they consider critical to resisting authoritarianism in the current climate may outweigh other concerns.
