We had the pleasure of encountering a shorebird frenzy at Plumb Beach with 7th graders from MS 88. High tide pushed us into the salt marsh early to make observations on the wading birds, horseshoe crabs, and fiddler crabs. A brief return to the beach revealed a feeding frenzy along the shoreline; all the birds looking for the horseshoe crab eggs that are essential food source. Big thanks to Council Member @shahanafrombk for her support bringing students outside to connect with their natural areas and the NYC water system. Another great trip to Orchard Beach with third graders from PS 119. While searching for shells the students came across many horseshoe crabs wandering the beach. From there we spoke about our wastewater and our impacts on marine life.
