First Tee

First Tee is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization aimed at enriching the lives of young people through golf education and life skills development. Founded in 1997 and based in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, First Tee operates with the mission to impact youth by providing programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values, and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. The organization claims to serve over 3.6 million youth annually through its various initiatives across the United States and internationally.

History

First Tee was established through a collaboration among the PGA Tour, PGA of America, LPGA, USGA, and the Masters Tournament Foundation, originally initiated by PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem. The organization transitioned to a new nonprofit entity, the PGA Tour First Tee Foundation, in 2019.

Programs and Demographics

First Tee focuses on youth aged 5 to 18, providing them opportunities to learn golf while also acquiring essential life skills. Participants progress through a structured programming model that emphasizes the importance of values such as integrity, respect, and perseverance.

The organization ensures accessibility by offering full scholarships and reduced fee programming for children from families with financial need. Additionally, First Tee has trained educators at over 10,000 schools since 2004 to incorporate golf into physical education curricula.

Governance

The board of governors is chaired by Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour commissioner, and includes various business leaders. Former President George W. Bush has served as the honorary chair since 2010, following former President George H. W. Bush.

First Tee operates numerous local chapters across the United States, each tailoring its programs to meet the needs of the communities it serves. These affiliates work to enhance participation among diverse populations, ensuring that golf is accessible and inclusive for all youth, particularly underrepresented groups.
