The Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) is the largest and oldest membership organization for professionals in the management of medical practices in the United States. History

The MGMA originated as the National Association of Clinic Managers, which first met in Madison, Wisconsin in 1926. The initial gathering centered on discussing the challenges faced by medical group practice managers and included a decision to conduct a survey of financial data from clinics. This survey, published the following year, provided critical insights into clinic organization, processes, and accounting methods. These early metrics continue to influence modern practices.

Over time, the organization evolved to include more formal structures. It began discussing formal association formation in 1934 and established bylaws, committees, and annual dues in 1944. The name was officially changed to the Medical Group Management Association in 1963.

As the MGMA grew, it expanded its role in data collection and dissemination, offering educational programs and resources. In 1973, it formed the Center for Research in Ambulatory Health Care Administration (CRAHCA) to focus on research and training related to medical group management. A notable achievement was the development of a chart of accounts specifically for medical group practices, supported by a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in 1976. This tool has significantly aided medical groups in understanding costs and improving financial performance.
