History

Toastmasters International began with a series of speech clubs organized by Ralph C. Smedley during his tenure at the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) in the early 1900s. However, the modern organization took shape on October 22, 1924, in Santa Ana, California, with Smedley's first permanent club. By the 1930s, Toastmasters had gone international, and it was officially incorporated as a nonprofit in 1932. Initially men-only, the organization began admitting women in 1973.

Structure and Programs

Toastmasters clubs typically consist of 20-30 members who meet regularly. These meetings include prepared speeches, Table Topics (impromptu speeches), and evaluations to provide constructive feedback. The organization offers several education programs, including the Pathways learning experience, which provides structured personal and professional development paths focused on public speaking, interpersonal communication, leadership, and more. The Speechcraft program is a shorter, intensive course for non-members.
