Alano Club of Kent County

Overview

The Alano Club of Kent County is a nonprofit organization established in 1952 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, dedicated to supporting individuals recovering from addiction. It serves as a welcoming space for recovery meetings, fellowship, and community support, operating 365 days a year.

History

Founded by a group including Peter D., David T., Fred L., Earl S., Arthur S., and Wellon B., the Alano Club was created in response to the growing need for recovery resources similar to those developed by Bill Wilson in Akron, Ohio. Initially operating in a small building on Bond Street, the organization quickly outgrew its space and relocated to a house donated by Dr. O. Nathan French at 1020 College Avenue NE, where it continues to meet today. Over the years, the Alano Club has undergone several renovations to maintain its facilities and adapt to the increasing number of visitors, ultimately serving over 50,000 individuals annually.

Mission and Vision

The mission of the Alano Club of Kent County is to provide a nurturing environment that encourages recovery from addiction through support, meetings, and fellowship. The organization emphasizes the importance of community and the various paths to recovery, advocating that each person's journey should be respected and celebrated.

The vision of the club focuses on rebuilding lives, healing families, and strengthening communities with the goal of eliminating the generational cycle of addiction and its adverse effects on society.

Programs and Services

The Alano Club hosts a diverse range of recovery support groups and meetings to cater to the varying needs of individuals seeking help. These include:

  • Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)
  • Narcotics Anonymous (NA)

  • SMART Recovery meetings
  • Support groups for food addiction and eating disorders

The club prioritizes confidentiality, safety, and respect, creating an inclusive atmosphere where members can share experiences, support each other, and empower one another on their paths to recovery.

Community Impact
