Gildas Club Southeastern Wisconsin Inc
At the end of 2012 Gilda's Club of SE WI closed it's doors. As required by law the few assets they had were transferred to another non-profit that was chosen by their board. The chosen non-profit was Stillwaters Cancer Support Services. Stillwaters serves Southeastern Wisconsin and provides free professional counseling and emotional support to cancer survivors and their families, at any point in their journey.
Gilda's Club Southeastern Wisconsin
Gilda's Club Southeastern Wisconsin was a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free emotional support, cancer education, and hope to individuals affected by cancer. The organization was part of the broader Gilda's Club network, named after the late comedian Gilda Radner, who suffered from ovarian cancer.
History
Gilda's Club Southeastern Wisconsin was established to create a supportive community for those dealing with cancer. However, it faced significant challenges due to severe storm flooding in the Milwaukee area, which caused irreparable damage to its building. This event, combined with financial constraints, led to the organization's closure on August 31, 2010[1].
Mission
Despite its closure, the mission of Gilda's Club Southeastern Wisconsin was aligned with its national counterparts. It aimed to provide a supportive environment where individuals could share experiences and learn from one another during their journey with cancer. The organization promoted networking groups, educational programs, and community activities to support cancer patients and their families at various stages of their illness[3].
Transition and Legacy
Following its closure, some of the support services and community networks were transitioned to other local cancer support organizations, ensuring that the community established by Gilda's Club could continue to find support. Gilda's Club's presence in other regions, such as Madison, continues to offer similar programs and services[1][2].
Name Change and Continuation of Services
The legacy of Gilda's Club Southeastern Wisconsin is also seen in the evolution of similar support services in the Greater Milwaukee area. Following its closing, a related organization, Cancer Support Community Greater Milwaukee, continued to provide support tailored to the needs of cancer patients and survivors, maintaining the core mission while adapting its operational structure[3].
