Communications Workers of America

The Communications Workers of America (CWA) is a major U.S. labor union representing employees in various sectors, including telecommunications, airlines, journalism, and numerous other industries. The CWA was originally founded in 1938 as the National Federation of Telephone Workers. It took on its current name in 1947 after reorganizing to form a national union for telephone workers. These mergers included the Association of Flight Attendants, the International Union of Electronic Workers, the Newspaper Guild, and the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians.

Members work in a wide range of fields, including telecommunications, news media, airlines, broadcast and cable television, public service, higher education, and healthcare. Major employers of CWA members include AT&T, Verizon, General Electric, leading newspapers, and several television networks.
