LOCAL CHAPTER OF COMMUNICATIONS WORKERS OF AMERICA LABOR ORGANIZATION, SUPPORTING LOCAL UNION MEMBERS ON EMPLOYMENT MATTERS AND OTHER COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES.

Communications Workers of America

The Communications Workers of America (CWA) is a major U.S. labor union representing employees in various sectors, including telecommunications, airlines, journalism, and numerous other industries. The union is affiliated with the AFL-CIO and is known for its active engagement in progressive politics.

History

The CWA was originally founded in 1938 as the National Federation of Telephone Workers. It took on its current name in 1947 after reorganizing to form a national union for telephone workers. Over the years, the CWA expanded its membership base beyond the telephone industry, merging with several other unions to become one of the largest and most influential labor unions in the United States. These mergers included the Association of Flight Attendants, the International Union of Electronic Workers, the Newspaper Guild, and the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians.

Membership and Representation

As of the early 21st century, the CWA comprises more than 1,200 local unions and represents over 700,000 members across the U.S. and Canada. Members work in a wide range of fields, including telecommunications, news media, airlines, broadcast and cable television, public service, higher education, and healthcare. Major employers of CWA members include AT&T, Verizon, General Electric, leading newspapers, and several television networks.

Political and Legislative Activities

The CWA is recognized for its strong political stance and legislative efforts, often aligning with progressive causes. It has contributed significantly to Democratic and liberal political groups and has supported initiatives aimed at enhancing workers' rights and social reforms. The union has been involved in various national campaigns, including the Democracy Initiative, a coalition focused on reshaping American politics from a progressive perspective.

Strike Actions

Throughout its history, the CWA has engaged in significant strike actions, particularly against major telecom companies like AT&T and Verizon. These strikes have often been over issues of wages, benefits, and working conditions.

Leadership

The current leadership includes President Claude Cummings Jr. and Secretary-Treasurer Ameenah Salaam. Previous notable leaders include Christopher Shelton and Lawrence Cohen, who both played pivotal roles in shaping the union's policies and alliances.

Alliances and Partnerships

CWA collaborates with numerous progressive organizations, including labor unions, civil rights groups, and environmental organizations like the Sierra Club. These alliances support the union's efforts to advocate for worker-friendly legislation and broader social change.
