Private air carriers are quietly cashing in on deportations – and few people are talking about it. One company sits at the center of ICE’s growing deportation machine, and it’s not an airline. CSI Aviation is a politically connected firm that is ICE’s prime contractor for deportation flights. It doesn’t fly the planes – it hires companies that do. In the last three years, CSI has received over $650 million in ICE contracts and is now awarding that work to private carriers like GlobalX, GEO Group, and Avelo Airlines. Meanwhile, watchdogs, human rights groups, and flight crews are sounding the alarm bells about shackling, poor medical care, and unsafe flight conditions. Want to know who stands to earn more money? Wealthy first-term Rep. George Whitesides (D-Calif.) sold up to $5.4M in stock – including companies that fall under his oversight responsibilities, like Lockheed Martin, RTX, and Virgin Galactic – to eliminate financial conflicts of interest. He also dumped his shares in Bank of America, Coca-Cola, Netflix, Visa, and Disney, transitioning his stock into passive investments and mutual funds. His office says this is step one in targeting government corruption, and he believes every member of Congress should follow suit. Meanwhile, it’s still up for debate whether members of Congress should even trade stocks in the first place, with violators of the STOCK ACT facing a $200 fine, if that.
