Box of Rain, an Annapolis-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, was founded in 2003 to honor the memory of Lee Griffin, a dedicated sailor and Annapolis community member who was the victim of a violent crime. The organization has grown from a maritime summer experience to a youth development organization offering year-round mentoring programs to hundreds of youth each year, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances. In 2019, the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park began operating two Box of Rain programs out of the Park Campus, Summer Maritime Program and Boat Building. Its mentoring focus helps Box of Rain kids build self-esteem, develop life skills and earn a sense of accomplishment that leads to positive contributions to the community.
