Oakwood University

Overview

Oakwood University is a private, historically black Seventh-day Adventist institution of higher education. It is the only Historically Black College or University (HBCU) owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

History

Oakwood University was founded in 1896 as the Oakwood Industrial School, with the mission of providing vocational education and spiritual direction to African-American students. Over the years, it evolved into Oakwood Manual Training School, Oakwood Junior College, and finally Oakwood College, before adopting its current name in 2008.

Academics

The university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees through five schools:

Oakwood University provides a biblically-based education focused on transforming students for service to God and humanity. It offers over 58 majors, including unique programs such as Nutrition with Vegetarian Culinary Emphasis, reflecting the dietary beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The university is also notable for its graduate programs, such as a master's in Urban Ministries and Community Development.

Located in Huntsville, Alabama, on a 1,185-acre campus, Oakwood University features a blend of historic landmarks and modern facilities. The campus includes nature trails, modern dorms, state-of-the-art classrooms, and recreational facilities like an Olympic-sized pool and a roller skating rink.

Athletics

Oakwood University competes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) as part of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. The university's men's teams include basketball, soccer, and baseball, while women compete in volleyball, soccer, basketball, and softball.
