We made it home and all 6 horses have settled in to their new digs. They’re such a sweet group and are all getting along so peacefully! Tonight they can rest and in the morning, everything will be different and better than ever before for each of these dear souls 🥰 (fb)

We’re on our way home! We were able to save 8 lives today! We are filled with so much joy and at the same time, with such a profound sadness for 2 of the 8 horses that were saved. The trailer ride home can be difficult for horses who have severe mobility issues that make it painful or impossible for them to carry weight on one or more limbs. Every minute spent in a moving trailer is the equivalent of one minute walking for a horse and all of the constant shifting and adjusting can cause horse with painful limb injuries to become extremely fatigued. In extreme cases these horses can fall in the trailer or even collapse when coming off of the trailer. Because of this, we made the very difficult decision to lay the Belgian gelding that was knuckled over at the knees and whose joints were so overwhelmed with arthritis his legs were literally bent unnaturally to rest at the auction. We also laid to rest an elderly mule who had extremely contracted tendons in both hind legs that had caused his hooves to become deformed. Unfortunately if it were only one leg there may have been a possibility that we could have attempted to treat, but both hind legs were sadly beyond repair. Both horses passed almost instantaneously. They let go and left this world behind in the blink of an eye. (fb)
