#ThrowbackThursday to the Old Athens Stockade in 1921. Nestled in the back corner of the historic Buena Vista neighborhood stands the Old Athens Stockade, opened in 1912. Although it once served as the city jail for most of the 20th century, it now holds stories that span from everyday detainees to those who protested segregation at The Varsity. In 2024, The Old Athens Stockade was added to the Historic Athens Places in Peril list to spark conversations and guide on-going grassroots preservation efforts to save the structure. Historic sites are a physical reminders of the diversity of our experiences and the history we share, but these places can’t be replaced once they are destroyed. DON'T FORGET! This weekend, join us on our Heritage Walk through Brooklyn Cemetery led by Linda & Kimberly Davis! Established in 1882, Brooklyn Cemetery is the final resting place for Black Athenians from the late 19th century through the present, including more than 40 veterans of both World Wars. Linda, who has family buried in the cemetery, co-founded the Friends of Brooklyn Cemetery in 2006 and has spent nearly two decades leading its restoration. Kimberly, her daughter, is now helping carry that work forward, preserving both the history of the site and the memory of those laid to rest. With the help of community members, volunteer groups, and student organizations, the Friends of Brooklyn Cemetery brought new life to a place long overlooked.
