Modernization was begun in the 1950s and today it carries over 20 million tons annually. It has been an important element of the economic growth and development for the area along the Waterway from Birmingham to Mobile and for the intransit shipping to and from points throughout the south. It is important and has grown with the completion of the Tennessee Tombigbee link because of the confluence of the two systems near Demopolis Alabama.
