Overview
Peace House Community (PHC) is a nonprofit organization based in the Twin Cities, dedicated to providing a safe and supportive environment for economically challenged and marginalized individuals. Since its inception in 1985, PHC has been a beacon of hope for those facing social and economic dislocation.
Mission and Vision
The mission of Peace House Community is to nourish the bodies and souls of its members by offering a place to belong. The organization enriches the lives of its members, volunteers, and students by fostering a community where everyone feels valued and heard. The vision is to heal community members through caring relationships in a supportive environment, addressing the wounds caused by economic and social challenges.
Guiding Principles
PHC operates under several guiding principles designed to create an atmosphere of cooperation and fairness:
- Open Expression: Ensuring all voices have an opportunity to express themselves.
- Diversity and Respect: Valuing the diversity of opinions and experiences within the community.
- Open-Mindedness: Listening to others with an open mind receptive to wisdom from all sources.
- Non-Violence: Practicing non-violence through self-restraint, encouraging words, compassionate actions, and respectful listening.
- Conflict Resolution: Approaching difficult situations with grace and serenity to resolve conflicts peacefully.
History
Peace House Community began its journey in 1985, founded with the understanding that people's spirits and souls needed to be nourished and healed. It became a ministry of listening to the stories of those who had no one to listen to them. In 1999, PHC became a nonprofit corporation, and around the same time, the property was donated to the organization. Following the passing of its founder, Sister Rose, in 2002, volunteers and board members continued her vision. A significant development occurred in 2013 when PHC relocated to a new custom-built facility after negotiating with a nonprofit housing developer. The organization further professionalized its operations in 2018 by hiring its first manager.
Impact and Services
Peace House Community provides a refuge from the chaos of life on the streets, offering a place for connection, affirmation, and the fulfillment of social, emotional, spiritual, and physical needs. Members find a sense of belonging and community, knowing their worth is not determined by their economic situation. PHC serves as a model for inclusivity, where anyone can participate without needing specific qualifications.
Community Testimonials
Community members have shared their positive experiences at PHC, highlighting the sense of acceptance, friendship, and support they find there. For many, it is a place to feel valued as they are, without judgment. The community has been instrumental in helping individuals cope with stressors such as loneliness and isolation associated with homelessness and poverty.
Conclusion
Peace House Community continues to play a vital role in the lives of economically challenged individuals in the Twin Cities, offering a sanctuary of hope and belonging. Through its commitment to nurturing and empowering its members, PHC remains a beacon of community and compassion.

The Need I feel more scared in this neighborhood during the day than during the night because during the day you let your guard down. The worst feeling in the world is when no one gives a crap about you. Thats when you start going crazy. About twice a year the struggle is so bad I just stay in bed.
