Description

North Carolina Association of Professional Psychologists

The North Carolina Association of Professional Psychologists (NCAPP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for and supporting Licensed Psychological Associates (LPAs) in North Carolina. NCAPP was formed in response to challenges faced by LPAs, particularly the requirement for career-long supervision, which hampers their ability to achieve independent practice and compete with other Master's level mental health providers.

Purpose and Activities

NCAPP focuses on addressing issues affecting LPAs, such as insurance credentialing and restricted licensure due to ongoing supervision requirements. The organization works towards making psychological services more accessible, affordable, and covered by insurance and governmental programs. NCAPP also aims to reduce operational costs for LPAs, thereby enhancing their professional practice environment.

History

The organization was established in 1994 after a group of LPAs recognized the need for collective action to address their professional challenges. Over the years, NCAPP has continued to advocate for changes that would allow LPAs to practice more independently, aligning with the status of other Master's level mental health professionals in North Carolina.

Leadership and Support

NCAPP is led by several dedicated professionals, including Carol E. Williams, Ph.D., LPA, BCBA-D, who serves as Co-President. The organization receives support from various individuals and organizations within the mental health field, all working towards advancing the interests of LPAs in North Carolina.

Public Impact

NCAPP's efforts contribute to improving public access to psychological services by promoting fair practice opportunities for LPAs. By advocating for policy changes and supporting professional development, NCAPP helps ensure that mental health services are more widely available and affordable for the public.
