As young people prepare for adulthood, they need services that promote their mental health and well-being, rooted in respect for and affirmation of their specific racial, ethnic, and cultural background. These culturally responsive supports help youth gain a positive sense of themselves and their community and equip them with key tools to manage life’s challenges. Yet for many youth across the country, particularly youth of color, what services do exist in their communities are one-size-fits-all and are not designed to be culturally responsive. Systems administrators and funders often prefer these “universal” supports, although they do not adequately address young people’s needs for healing and can even undermine their well-being. We owe young people so much more. They deserve funders and administrators who recognize the value of diverse, culturally responsive supports and commit to increasing their availability.
