Across continental Europe, the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) is staging a comeback...but could concerns be addressed to enable its return to Scotland too? Although once widespread, lynx have been extinct in Scotland for centuries, likely due to over-hunting for fur and reductions in prey and habitat availability. But studies are now underway on the feasibility of a possible #reintroduction. Between May and November 2024, we led a process to address concerns raised in a previous (2021) study. A cross-sectoral group of 53 institutional representatives explored: 🌲 Habitat and prey availability 🐑 Potential positive and negative impacts of lynx on deer, gamebirds, livestock, and other species of concern; and ⚖️ The potential opportunities and risks presented by a return of lynx to Scotland If reintroduction goes forward, a clear recommendation from the process is that it must be phased, adaptive, and inclusive in its design with transparency, trust-building, and sustainable support at its core. 👥 Stakeholders supported the next move towards a more local level consultation process, involving individual landowners and others who may be directly impacted by a potential reintroduction of lynx to Scotland.
