Throwback 75 years to May 21, 1950, when the newly formed Solomons Island Outboard Club (SIOC) staged its first Patuxent River Marathon. It was an ambitious and grueling 40-mile boat race from Solomons to Benedict and return. Fifty-three drivers entered their stock outboard boats in six separate classes. The overall winner was Carl Breland of Solomons driving his CU class hydroplane. The winner of the EU class was Carl Johnson of Solomons. His first-place trophy was donated to the museum by Betty Ann Johnson and is on display in the maritime history gallery. The SIOC was sponsored by the Solomons Island Yacht Club.
