Today we are celebrating 22nd section president Albert “Al” Houghton, PGA as we commemorate the MAPGA's 100th year! Al Houghton, a 1989 Hall of Fame inductee. Known as the "Silver Fox" and "The Senator," he served multiple terms as MAPGA President and held National PGA office. Houghton dramatically elevated the status of MAPGA Championships, organized PGA Tour stops like the National Capital Open, and revitalized regional opens post-WWII. He also assisted in developing the National Celebrities Open and is credited with the National Women’s Open. Born in 1903 near Glen Echo, Maryland, Houghton began his golf journey as a caddie at Bannockburn in 1914. His impressive career included four Maryland Open titles, a District of Columbia Open win, and numerous regional victories. He played in five PGA Championships and six U.S. Opens. At the National PGA level, he chaired several committees and proposed an early PGA equipment program for pensions. Recognized for his civic contributions, he received the Distinguished Citizen of Maryland Award in 1959 and was inducted into the Maryland Athletic Hall of Fame in 1969. #mapga100 (fb)
