In brief, our approach is to:• Educate, raising awareness of the food and fuel issues facing our country;• Engage, working with the public to change their behaviors to be more sustainable; and • Invest, supporting new innovations in sustainability that can transform the marketplace.Global oil and food systems are both operating near full capacity, and demand is on the rise. As a result, rising prices are hurting Americans today, and the United States is at risk of food and fuel shortages in the future. We believe that mitigating these risks has substantial benefits for the community in the short and long term. Our approach has three elements.Education: Sustainable America’s mission is to draw attention to the many ways in which our nation’s food and fuel systems are linked and interdependent, and support the development and spread of efforts to make both systems more sustainable. Without a concerted effort to develop solutions to agricultural and energy shortcomings, we will be faced with a global crisis. Sustainable America is dedicated to providing information and supporting initiatives that develop these solutions. There are four aspects of food and fuel on which we focus:1. Reducing Oil Dependency by encouraging the development and use of oil substitutes for transportation including electricity, natural gas, and advanced (non-food-based) biofuels;2. Reducing Oil Consumption by encouraging increased energy efficiency, mass transit, ridesharing, and shorter commutes;3. Improving Food Supplies by making use of more sustainable food resources, encouraging the consumption of locally-sourced food including urban farming, and increasing the use of alternative and enhanced farming methods to raise crop yields; and 4. Reducing Food Waste by encouraging composting, educating consumers on buying habits and food storage, and working with food producers and providers to reduce waste.Engagement: Noted behavior theorist BJ Fogg suggests that three conditions are necessary for a person to change their behavior. A person needs: Motivation [a willingness to take an action], Ability [the capacity to act], and Trigger [a reason to act right now]. When a behavior does not occur, at least one of those three elements is missing. Information about the importance of sustainable choices, and punishments for acting in an unsustainable manner, are important as motivations. The passage of a law on a date certain and the presence of various sanctions are important as triggers. What is missing is the ability to act – the understanding amongst the population that there are manageable things that they, as individuals, can do to make a difference, and the demonstration of tangible examples of those things in action. Sustainable America provides those demonstrations. Sustainable America fosters the growth of that understanding. Investment: Sustainable America acts as an “angel” capitalist, seeking out entrepreneurs and innovations that will improve the degree to which food and/or fuel is produced, distributed, and used for current and future generations. We then invest directly in these promising directions alone, through a consortium of partners that varies by investment, or we manage the investment on behalf of other entities. Any profits realized through this investment process are used to support future investment. We strongly believe in the power of change through action at all levels – individual, organizational, regional, and national. We believe that market-based solutions, when combined with motivated citizens, work best to bring about change, and that together we can make a difference. With focused and concerted efforts, we can create a more sustainable America into the future.
