Kanawha Valley Friends of Old-Time Music and Dance

Kanawha Valley Friends of Old-Time Music and Dance, often abbreviated as FOOTMAD, is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization based in Charleston, West Virginia. The mission of FOOTMAD is to promote and preserve traditional music and dance in the Greater Kanawha Valley.

History

FOOTMAD was founded in 1981 with the goal of fostering a community passionate about traditional music and dance. Over the years, it has become a cornerstone for cultural activities in the region, dedicated to celebrating and sharing the heritage of old-time music and dance.

Activities

Concert Series

FOOTMAD hosts an annual concert series that typically runs from September to April, featuring six concerts per season. These concerts bring both local and national artists to the stage, offering audiences a chance to enjoy intimate performances in some of the Kanawha Valley's finest theaters.

Dance Series

The organization also sponsors a Community Dance Series from October to June, with monthly dances held at various local venues. These dances include a variety of styles, such as squares, circles, contras, and occasionally Scottish or Irish dances. The events are designed to be beginner-friendly, welcoming participants of all skill levels.

Wandering Minstrel Concerts

In addition to regular concerts and dances, FOOTMAD occasionally hosts Wandering Minstrel Concerts. These special events feature traveling musicians performing in house concerts or small, local venues, providing a unique and intimate experience for both the performers and the audience.

Whitewater Whirl Contra Dance Weekend

One of the highlights of FOOTMAD's calendar is the Whitewater Whirl Contra Dance Weekend, held annually over the first weekend of May at Fayette County Park. This event attracts over 100 dancers from around the country and Canada, offering three days of dance, music, food, and camaraderie in the scenic New River Gorge area.

Community Engagement and Funding

FOOTMAD relies on grants and contributions to support its activities. Major supporters include local foundations and governmental bodies, which help maintain the vibrant cultural landscape of the Kanawha Valley. The organization is entirely volunteer-driven, with a Board of Directors overseeing its programs and operations.

Impact

Through its concerts, dances, workshops, and other events, FOOTMAD plays a significant role in enriching the cultural heritage of the Kanawha Valley. By promoting traditional music and dance, the organization helps to preserve these art forms for future generations while fostering community engagement and cultural appreciation.
