The mission of the South Durham Farmers’ Market (SDFM) is to provide access in the Durham community to delicious and healthy food grown in a way that sustains and enriches our local environment. As part of its mission, the SDFM seeks to offer a welcoming venue for the over 20,000 food insecure households in Durham County. To increase the accessibility and affordability of local foods, the market began accepting benefits received through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and offering Double Bucks, a program in which the market matches the first ten SNAP dollars withdrawn by a customer each market day. This program is intended to stretch food dollars and incentivize individuals to use their SNAP benefits toward nutritious, locally grown foods. The program also helps include food insecure families in a nourishing and supportive community.
