On May 22, 1972, Henry Ford II identified the 32-acre waterfront site (pictured, courtesy of the Detroit News) including the Grand Trunk Railroad's Brush Street depot as the site for the Renaissance Center, a major attempt to revitalize downtown Detroit. Plans for the massive complex had been announced the previous November, and John Portman had been announced as the project's architect. Business tenants began moving in as early as 1976, and the Renaissance Center was officially dedicated in April of 1977. #ThisDayInAutoHeritage (fb)
