Friendship is so critical to the well-being of animals. Horses are herd animals, meant to leave in groups. Their group dynamic keeps them safe, offers comfort, protection, allows them to find resources and share the workload. Like people, some horses form stronger bonds, some have lots of friends, some are higher up in the group dynamic and some just exisit peacefully on the fringes. 2 years ago Jewel (on the left) sustained a kick to to her hind right leg that needed surgery to remove fractured bone fragments and infuse the tendon sheath with antibiotics to ensure she didn't get a potentially life threatening infection. She was gone for only about 24 hours before she was home with us for her aftercare. Her best friend Summer was beside herself while she was gone, and wouldn't leave Jewel's side once she got home. We honestly credit Summer (right) for Jewel being able to make such a quick and complete recovery. While Jewel's typical lifestyle was turned upside down with stall rest, confinement and bandage changes, her best friend stayed with her through it all and it kept her calm and improved her mental state.
