Delta Upsilon International Fraternity Inc. is a US-registered nonprofit organization, known for its collegiate men's fraternity, Delta Upsilon (ΔΥ). Founded on November 4, 1834, at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious fraternities in the United States and Canada.

Founding and Mission

Delta Upsilon was established by 30 men as "The Social Fraternity," with the aim of creating a non-secret society that focuses on promoting friendship and character development among its members. The founders sought to counteract the influence of existing secret societies on campus, promoting openness and inclusivity. The fraternity's motto, "Dikaia Upotheke" or "Justice, Our Foundation," reflects its commitment to these values.

History

Over the years, Delta Upsilon expanded rapidly, becoming part of the Anti-Secrecy Confederation in 1847. By 1864, the organization officially adopted the name Delta Upsilon. It became an international fraternity with the establishment of its first Canadian chapter at McGill University in Montreal in 1898. Throughout its history, Delta Upsilon has endured significant events like the American Civil War and the Great Depression without closing any chapters. It continued to grow and innovate, establishing educational programs and leadership initiatives.

Organizational Structure

Delta Upsilon operates through a bicameral legislative system, consisting of the Undergraduate Convention and the Assembly of Trustees. These bodies meet annually to make, repeal, and adopt fraternity laws. An indirectly elected board oversees operational management between these meetings, employing a full-time executive director to manage the secretariat.

Chapters and Membership

The fraternity currently consists of active chapters across the United States and Canada. Members, known as "DUs," include notable figures such as U.S. presidents, judges, congressmen, Nobel laureates, and prominent business leaders. The fraternity's educational foundation supports scholarships and educational programs for its members.
