Not every day in rescue is a happy one, and not all outcomes are success stories. We believe in being transparent and this girl broke our hearts. This dog was surrendered yesterday by her breeder after noticing her losing weight and a vet visit that produced no answers without extensive testing. We were willing to do all the testing needed and agreed to take her. Sweet girl was in a state that was so far gone that there was no humane option to save her. We consulted 2 veterinarians and saving her today would have meant she just continued to suffer tomorrow. She was an elderly puppy mill mama, diabetic in severe ketoacidosis, had a serious liver issue, and was also hypothyroid. She was so tired. One of our amazing volunteers held her as she peacefully passed and told her over and over that she mattered and that she was loved. She did not die alone in a kennel, because our volunteers loved her without knowing her and got her the help she needed to end her suffering. Life was so unkind to her. There are fates worse than death, languishing alone every day in pain is one of them. Lilybelle was loved, if only for a short time. If we could have saved you sweet girl, we would have.
