National Association of Government Employees
The National Association of Government Employees (NAGE), also known as SEIU Local 5000, is a U.S. labor union representing government employees. It was established on July 16, 1961, in a convention of the Federal Employees Veterans Association (FEVA), which aimed to secure higher wages, better benefits, and improved work rules for World War II veterans working for the federal government[1].
History
NAGE was formed in anticipation of President John F. Kennedy signing Executive Order 10988, which would establish collective bargaining rights for federal employees[1]. Since its inception, the union has significantly expanded its membership base. In 1970, the International Brotherhood of Police Officers (IBPO) affiliated with NAGE, and in 1977, state government bargaining units from Massachusetts joined[1]. NAGE became an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) in 1982[1]. During the early 1990s, NAGE created the International Association of EMTs and Paramedics (IAEP) to represent employees in emergency medical services, marking its first foray into representing private sector employees[1].
Leadership and Controversies
Kenneth T. Lyons, NAGE's founding president, led the union until 2001 when he was removed by SEIU leadership due to allegations involving misuse of union funds and obstructing a state ethics investigation[1]. David Holway succeeded Lyons in 2002 and has since served as president of NAGE, the IBPO, and the International Brotherhood of Corrections Officers (IBCO)[1]. Holway has been involved in public conflicts with Democratic politicians in his roles[1].
Representation and Activities
NAGE represents approximately 43,000 members across the United States, including state and federal government employees, municipal employees, registered nurses, EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, law enforcement professionals, and military air technicians[3]. The union is committed to enhancing the dignity, worth, and conditions of its members in various public and private sectors.
Settlements and Advocacy
NAGE has been involved in significant settlements and advocacy efforts, such as reaching a $60 million settlement with the Department of Veterans Affairs regarding Fair Labor Standards Act and overtime grievances[5]. The union actively participates in legal and legislative actions to protect the rights of government employees.
