Did you know that many of the bricks used to build Jacksonville’s Old City Hall came from the town’s first brick building which stood on the same site? It housed Maury & Davis, a successful mercantile partnership ended by the Civil War. Learn more about what 19th Century Jacksonville was like at 10am this Saturday while stretching your legs in the comfort of morning temperatures on Historic Jacksonville, Inc.’s guided “Walk through History” tour! Prepare to time travel back to the late 1800s when Jacksonville was the hub of Southern Oregon. Hear how gambling money built a church; how a saloon housed the county’s first museum; how fire reshaped the town; and how a railroad both destroyed the town and preserved it. Tours leave from Jacksonville’s New City Hall (the historic Jackson County Courthouse-Jacksonville Museum) at 206 North 5th Street. They cover about 1 mile and last about 1 hour. Tours are FREE, but donations are always welcomed—all monies go towards maintaining and preserving historic buildings seen on the tour. Additional information is available at https://www.historicjacksonville.org/walk-through-history/. And do visit www.historicjacksonville.org for more stories about the 19th Century people, places, and events that shaped who we are today! And stay tuned for more info about Old City Hall becoming a Jacksonville museum! #historicjacksonville #jacksonvilleoregon #nationalhistoriclandmark #nationalhistoricdistrict #walkthroughhistory #19thCentury #walkthroughhistory #oldcityhall (fb)

On Friday, June 13th, the “ghoulies, and ghosties, and long-legged beasties” are back — plus brothels, epidemics, hangings, murder, arson, saloons, and haunted houses! Join Historic Jacksonville, Inc. for a guided Haunted History walking tour and learn about the ghosts that linger in Jacksonville’s National Historic Landmark District. You’ll also learn a little history about the buildings, their occupants, and life in a gold rush town! Tours leave from the Jacksonville Visitors Center at the corner of North Oregon and C streets and last about 1 hour. Choose from 2 different tours. The flat 7:15 pm Courthouse route features brothels, epidemics, and hangings. The 7:00 pm and 7:30 pm Britt Hill tours highlight murder, arson, saloons, Oregon’s oldest Chinatown, and 2 of the most haunted houses in town (although both tours have lots of haunted houses). Tours are $10 per person and reservations are required. You’ll find info and reservations at https://historicjacksonville.org/haunted-history-tours/. Friday the 13th could be your “lucky” day if you join us for a very spirited evening! (fb)

Following the discovery of gold in the winter of 18512 Jacksonville Oregon became a melting pot of races classes and cultures as ambitious individuals pursued the promise of riches. The offer of free land brought settlers seeking opportunity. The influx of miners and settlers attracted merchantswith goods to sell and opportunists of all kinds. Historic Jacksonville Inc.
