History

The organization began when Ginny Fox Beveridge, a Richmond resident, was unable to find local medical help for her blindness. After seeking treatment elsewhere, she resolved to build a hospital in Central Virginia to provide care for others facing similar challenges. This vision led to the establishment of the Richmond Eye Hospital, which later expanded its services and was rebranded as MEDARVA Healthcare in 2023[2].

MEDARVA Foundation

The MEDARVA Foundation supports several critical programs aimed at enhancing vision care and overall health outcomes in the community:

• Low Vision Center: This is the region’s only independent, not-for-profit low vision clinic, providing specialized care and aids for individuals with vision impairment[1][3].
• Pre-K Vision Program: Offers free vision screenings for young children across Central Virginia to ensure early detection and intervention[1].
• MedRVA Vision Clinic at CrossOver: Collaborates with CrossOver Healthcare Ministry to provide essential eye care for those who are uninsured and medically underserved[1].

Outpatient Surgical Services

MEDARVA operates two outpatient surgery centers with 16 operating and procedure rooms. These facilities are recognized for having one of the lowest infection rates and high patient satisfaction ratings[4]. The organization is locally controlled by a non-profit board of directors composed of community volunteers.

Imaging and Research

In addition to its surgical services, MEDARVA also includes an imaging center. The organization supports medical research and education through the MEDARVA Foundation, which contributes to expanding medical knowledge and access within the community.
