Little League Baseball, Inc.
Little League Baseball, Inc. is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to providing youth sports programs with a focus on developing discipline, teamwork, courage, loyalty, good character, and strong physical health. It was founded in 1938 by Carl Stotz in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, with the goal of creating a baseball league for pre-teens. The first games were played in 1939, involving 30 players organized into three teams sponsored by local businesses.
History
- Early Years: Initially, the program grew within Pennsylvania, expanding to 12 leagues over the next seven years. The first league outside Pennsylvania was established in New Jersey in 1947, marking the inception of the Little League World Series.
- Expansion: By 1950, Little League expanded to U.S. military installations abroad. The first permanent international league was established in British Columbia, Canada, in 1951. By 1999, Little League had spread to more than 100 countries globally.
- Development: Little League expanded its offerings to include softball programs starting in 1974 and various age divisions for both baseball and softball. Today, it offers programs for children aged 4 to 16.
Structure
Little League is structured at four main levels:
- Local: Each local league is autonomous with its own constitution, board of directors, and geographical boundaries. It offers opportunities for children to participate regardless of financial ability.
- District: Comprised of 10-20 local leagues, each district organizes tournaments and provides leadership.
- Region: The U.S. is divided into five regions, and there are international regions in Canada, South Korea, Poland, and others.
- International: Governed by Little League International, the organization provides resources and support worldwide.
Mission and Impact
Little League emphasizes providing opportunities for all children to develop character through sports, focusing on inclusion and teamwork. It believes in the transformative power of youth sports to build stronger individuals and communities.
