Catholic War Veterans of the United States of America Inc.

The Catholic War Veterans of the United States of America Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving veterans and advancing Catholic values in the United States.

History

The organization was founded on May 19, 1935, by Monsignor Edward J. Higgins, a World War I veteran, with the first meeting taking place at Immaculate Conception Church in Astoria, Queens, New York. Monsignor Higgins aimed to create an entity that would support veterans while upholding Catholic principles. Shortly after its inception, the organization received the Apostolic Blessing of Pope Pius XI[1].

The Catholic War Veterans gained recognition as a veterans service organization by the Veterans Administration in 1940. By the late 1940s, it had grown significantly, becoming one of the most influential patriotic organizations in the U.S., with membership exceeding half a million[1].

Purpose and Activities

The Catholic War Veterans serve as a national service organization focused on supporting military veterans and their families, regardless of religious affiliation. Membership is open to baptized Catholics who have served in the United States Armed Forces for at least 90 days or are currently on active duty[3]. Specific wartime service is not required for membership.

The organization advocates for Catholic Action and Americanism, promoting faith-based service and patriotism among its members. Activities include organizing memorial services, participating in community events, providing scholarships, and engaging in youth programs[3]. It also offers support to veterans in navigating benefits and ensures that their sacrifices are honored and remembered[3].

Organizational Structure

The organization is complemented by the Catholic War Veterans Auxiliary, which includes family members of veterans. The Auxiliary was the first of its kind to open membership to men, breaking away from traditional Ladies Auxiliary models[2]. The Auxiliary works closely with the veterans to serve the community and support those who have served in the armed forces[1].

Congressional Charter

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan granted the Catholic War Veterans a Congressional Charter, marking it as the first explicitly religious organization to receive this honor[1][2].

Future Directions

The Catholic War Veterans continue to play a vital role in preserving history and honoring veterans' contributions. The organization remains committed to its mission of serving veterans, fostering community engagement, and promoting cherished family values[3].
