While many Catholics view confirmation as a “graduation” from faith formation, the purpose of the rite is to “perfect the common priesthood of the faithful, received in Baptism,” according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. To avoid disaffiliation of young people, Catholic Church leaders need to make conscious efforts to engage and form youth and families. This requires doubling down on youth catechesis and ministry efforts and constantly reevaluating the effectiveness of practices that may be outdated and ineffective for today’s young people.
