East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice stands with @garfieldeastla Garfield High School teachers, students and parents who are urging LAUSD @laschools and LD East to save their Aztec Dance program, known as GHS Danza Mexica @ghsdanzamexica GHS Danza Mexica, led by teacher Erica Huerta, is a cultural performing arts program that is in danger of being lost due to the displacement of their instructor. In a time of controversy around arts funding compounded by vicious attacks on immigrant communities, the District needs to take the measures necessary to save thriving arts programs, especially a program that highlights the culture and identities of Indigenous youth. Ms. Huerta is a long-time educator and @utlanow union activist who champions social justice and cultural preservation. She has served with LAUSD for over 25 years and was one of the 2022 LAUSD Teachers of the Year. We urge the district to support this educator and the program she has developed in East Los Angeles by keeping her on staff, teaching history and Aztec Dance in the fall.
