Grand Symphonic Winds

The Grand Symphonic Winds is a civic wind ensemble based in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. Established in 1987, the ensemble operates under the Minnesota Nonprofit Corporate Act and is recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization. Its mission is to provide opportunities for musicians to perform high-quality music while making it accessible to the wider community.

History and Mission

Founded with the aim of becoming a high-quality civic wind ensemble, Grand Symphonic Winds has grown significantly over the years. The organization is dedicated to showcasing symphonic wind literature, from traditional to newly created works, thereby expanding the perception of what a concert band can be. It strives to challenge both its members and audience with a diverse range of musical styles.

Leadership and Structure

The ensemble is led by Music Director Dr. Matthew George, who is a renowned conductor and educator. Dr. George holds positions at the University of St. Thomas and has conducted numerous ensembles globally.

Grand Symphonic Winds performs regularly in various venues across Minnesota, including churches and auditoriums. The ensemble has championed new music, featuring dozens of unique compositions from international composers. Rehearsals and Facilities

Rehearsals for Grand Symphonic Winds take place every Thursday evening during the concert season at the Brady Educational Center on the University of St. Thomas's St. Paul campus. The use of these facilities and equipment is graciously supported by the University of St. Thomas Department of Music.

It strives to expand and redefine the perception of what constitutes a concert band. GSW has made the conscious decision to challenge both its members and audience with a wide range of musical styles. During its 25 year history it has championed new music including dozens of unique compositions from across the globe that have rarely or never been performed in Minnesota previously.
