“I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free. And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me." - Lee Greenwood This Memorial Day, we remember (and are eternally grateful for) all US Service men and women that have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country. Photo: 19 June 1944. Burial at sea for 24 of 27 fallen crewmen. During the First Battle of the Philippine Sea, a 500-pound bomb dropped on SOUTH DAKOTA's main deck with an explosion that tore into the superstructure and gouged an 8x10-foot hole in the deck. By the time Japan surrendered, a total of 96 brave men would give their life serving aboard the USS South Dakota during WWII. (fb)
