Marine Corps League

The Marine Corps League (MCL) is the only congressionally chartered veterans organization related to the United States Marine Corps. Established on November 10, 1922, in New York City, it received its congressional charter from the 75th U.S. Congress, signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 4, 1937. The organization is dedicated to preserving the traditions and promoting the interests of the Marine Corps.

Mission and Objectives

The mission of the Marine Corps League is to promote the interests of the United States Marine Corps and to foster the fraternity of Marines, their families, and all those who have served with the Marine Corps. It aims to strengthen the bonds among Marines, FMF Corpsmen, and FMF Chaplains, while instilling ideals of Americanism and volunteerism.

Structure

The League operates as a non-profit organization under Section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code. Its operations are coordinated through a national command structure, including a National Commandant, a National Board of Trustees, and numerous elected national officers. The organization is divided into geographical divisions, which help manage the various detachments located across the United States and overseas. Each detachment serves local communities by organizing events, providing support, and engaging in charitable activities.

Programs and Activities

The Marine Corps League engages in a wide range of activities that support both veterans and their families, including:

  • Scholarship Programs: The MCL supports educational opportunities for the children and grandchildren of its members through various scholarship initiatives.

  • Youth Programs: The League sponsors youth education and service programs, such as the Young Marines, which emphasize leadership, teamwork, and a healthy lifestyle. The Youth Physical Fitness Program also encourages physical fitness among youth.

  • Humanitarian Assistance: The League provides financial assistance to Marines and their families facing hardships, ensuring that support reaches those in need through local detachments.

  • Community Engagement: MCL members actively participate in community service, veteran advocacy, and public events to honor the service and sacrifices of Marines.

Membership

As of recent statistics, the Marine Corps League has approximately 63,250 members nationwide. Membership is open to all Marines, FMF Navy personnel, and associated family members, with various levels of involvement available. Members are encouraged to participate actively in local detachments and to contribute to the League's mission through volunteering and fundraising efforts.

Publications and Communication

The Marine Corps League publishes Semper Fi Magazine, which provides members with updates on activities, articles related to Marine Corps heritage, and resources for veterans. The League also maintains a national website and resources for members to stay connected and informed.

In summary, the Marine Corps League serves as a vital organization that unites Marines and their families, fosters community support, and preserves the legacy of the U.S. Marine Corps through various charitable and educational initiatives.
