Spike is back to tell us all about our #FridayFind. This week, the archaeology team started work on the kitchen cellar fill. While they haven't gotten far, the finds are already promising as they include burned glass, larger ceramics, and a tobacco pipe bowl. This pipe, which also shows signs of being in the fire, is of note since it bears the royal coat of arms. Here you can see the majority of a lion, representing England, and the start of a banner that once said "dieu et mon droit.” This pipe was a surprise to Spike who knew of the Washington family’s support for the patriotic cause. He learned that loyalties can change over time and finding artifacts like this provide insight to the minds of their owners. (fb)
