Autism Climbs

Introduction

Autism Climbs is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals and families affected by autism through rock climbing activities. The organization was founded in 2015 by Yisha Wagner, whose son's autism diagnosis inspired her to explore alternative activities that could offer therapeutic benefits.

Mission and Objectives

The primary mission of Autism Climbs is to create a supportive community for people on the autism spectrum by organizing climbing activities. While recognizing the importance of therapy and support, the organization focuses on the concept of encouragement, celebrating the joy and potential of individuals with autism. Autism Climbs aims to provide a fun and engaging environment for participants, often complementing rigorous therapy schedules with enjoyable activities.

Programs and Partnerships

Autism Climbs partners with various climbing gyms to organize monthly meet-ups, enabling individuals with autism to engage in climbing. The organization occasionally hosts outdoor climbing excursions, fostering a festive atmosphere that encourages social interaction and physical activity. Partnerships with entities like ABC Kids Climbing in Boulder have facilitated sensory-friendly programming and educational workshops, enhancing the accessibility of climbing for individuals on the autism spectrum.

Impact and Philosophy

By utilizing climbing as an activity, Autism Climbs seeks to offer both physical and cognitive benefits to participants. The organization's approach emphasizes the value of fun and shared experiences in the autism community, promoting a culture of support and understanding. Autism Climbs has contributed to a broader awareness of the benefits of adaptive sports for individuals with autism, highlighting the importance of inclusive and accessible recreational activities.
