DeafLEAD
DeafLEAD is a US nonprofit organization founded in 1995, originally known as the Youth L.E.A.D. Foundation. It is a Deaf-run and Deaf-led organization, focusing on providing comprehensive support services to Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Late-Deafened, and DeafBlind individuals.
Mission and Services
DeafLEAD's mission is to provide victim services, with a focus on crisis intervention, advocacy, case management, interpreting, and mental health support. The organization offers these services 24/7 to victims of crime and their families. Additionally, DeafLEAD lends its expertise to ensure that services for crime victims with hearing loss are culturally and linguistically appropriate.
Leadership
Dr. Stephanie Logan is a key figure in DeafLEAD's history, having become the first employee of what was then the Youth L.E.A.D. Foundation in 1995. She is responsible for establishing the organization's crisis line, which later evolved into DeafLine Missouri. Dr. Logan's leadership reflects the organization's commitment to Deaf-centered decision-making.
Achievements
Over its nearly three decades of operation, DeafLEAD has expanded its services significantly. It became the first "for Deaf, by Deaf" organization to receive accreditation through the American Association of Suicidology in 2018. Additionally, DeafLEAD was selected as a National Chat and Text Center for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and later became a statewide provider of Missouri's 988 Chat and Text Services.
Impact
DeafLEAD's unique approach as a Deaf-led organization allows it to provide services that are tailored to the needs of the Deaf community. This includes understanding the lived experiences of its members, which guides its decision-making processes. The organization plays a crucial role in supporting victims of crime and their families, ensuring they receive culturally appropriate care.

Mindfulness isn’t just about slowing down, it’s about checking in with yourself. Our team shared questions they ask themselves to stay present, grounded, and kind. Take a moment. Breathe. Which question speaks to you the most? #MindfulMay #MentalHealthAwareness #CheckInWithYourself #DeafLEAD #ASLWellness #MindfulnessMatters #SelfCompassion #PauseAndReflect A video started with a vertical graphic with a gradient background transitioning from light teal on the left to darker teal on the right. Bold black and purple text at the top reads: “Mindful May Check-In” Centered on the screen is an illustrated design featuring three symbolic images: a person meditating, a head silhouette with a heart and plant inside, and a person with a peaceful expression surrounded by clouds. The illustrations are outlined in purple, teal, and white, and are visually grouped together in a soft circular frame. Below the illustrations is a white banner with purple text: “Mindful May Series” Next to the text is a light teal circular arrow icon and DeafLEAD logo displayed on the bottom. The video continues with the same vertical gradient background, light teal on the left fading into darker teal on the right, as eight individuals appear one at a time, each centered on screen: A white individual wearing a navy cold-shoulder top with lace detail, blue jeans, large silver hoop earrings, and gem rings. A white woman with brown hair and light red tips, red glasses, and a green shirt. A cisgender Caucasian woman with pulled-back hair, a black button-up shirt with rolled sleeves, small hoop earrings, and a subtle necklace. A light-skinned Hispanic woman with long wavy dark brown hair, smiling and signing in front of a black backdrop while wearing a DeafLEAD polo shirt. A white woman with shoulder-length brown hair, wearing a mauve t-shirt. An individual with light skin and short light brown hair, wearing a green long-sleeved sweater and blue glasses, standing in front of a white wall. An African American woman with short black-and-white curly hair, red cat-eye glasses, and a black dress, also against a white wall. A medium-skinned Latino man wearing glasses and a navy shirt, standing against a solid background. A video ended with the same vertical gradient background, light teal on the left fading into darker teal on the right. At the top, bold white text reads: “WE ARE HERE FOR YOU!” Below are two individuals signing “Precious and Support” in ASL. At the bottom, logos for 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and the Deaf Crisis Line (321-800-DEAF) appear above the text: “TEXT OR VIDEOPHONE OPEN 24/7/365” The DeafLEAD logo is at the bottom. (fb)
