Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County

The Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County is a local history museum based in Moorhead, Minnesota. It operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the history and culture of Clay County.

History

The organization was established in 1932 as the Clay County Historical Society. In 2009, it merged with the Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center, adopting its current name. This merger expanded its role in preserving and interpreting local history and culture.

Mission

The society's mission is to collect, preserve, interpret, and share the history and culture of Clay County. It aims to tell local stories through its museum, archives, and programming.

Facilities and Exhibitions

The organization directs the museum and archives at the Hjemkomst Center, a building known for its distinctive ship sail roof design. The center features the Hjemkomst Viking Ship, which is renowned for its historic 6,000-mile voyage across the Atlantic in 1982. Additionally, the center includes the Moorhead Hopperstad Stave Church replica and hosts rotating art and history exhibitions.

Historic Sites

The society manages several historic sites in Clay County, including:

  • Bergquist Cabin: Constructed by John Gustav Bergquist, one of the earliest settlers in Moorhead. It was restored and donated by his grandson, Dewey Bergquist, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Comstock House: Built between 1882 and 1883 in a blend of Queen Anne and Eastlake styles. It was constructed by Solomon Comstock, a prominent figure in Moorhead's early development, and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Collections

The society holds significant collections, including the Flaten/Wange Glass Plate Negative Collection, which features photographs of early Moorhead taken by local photographers Ole E. Flaten and S. P. Wange.

Programming

The organization offers educational programs, tours, and events throughout the year. It strives to engage the community by sharing the rich history and cultural heritage of Clay County.
