At CYSO, we believe young musicians thrive when they’re exposed to a broad musical language. Our steelpan program introduces students to the vibrant rhythms and rich cultural traditions of Caribbean music, expanding their understanding of global musical expression. Led by conductor Scott McConnell, a Chicago-area percussionist, steelpan performer, and educator, the ensemble empowers students to explore new sounds, build ensemble skills, and grow as dynamic, well-rounded musicians. No experience is necessary to join CYSO’s Steel Orchestras! Last Sunday, the stage of Orchestra Hall came alive with music, energy, and celebration as CYSO’s Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras performed their final concert of the season. Family, friends, and supporters gathered for a night that showcased not only musical excellence but also the heart of the CYSO community. A tremendous thank you to all of our CYSO families, alumni, and friends who joined us to cheer on our young musicians, as well as 700 supporters who tuned in to the livestream from afar.
