The University of Minnesota Retirees Association (UMRA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting retirees from the University of Minnesota with each other and with the university. It provides a platform for community building, learning, and service opportunities. The association is active in organizing events and programs, fostering an environment where its members can engage in various activities and stay connected with the university community.

Mission and Activities

UMRA's mission encompasses three core aspects: connect, learn, and serve. The association promotes these values through regular meetings, educational forums, and service initiatives. Members participate in diverse interest groups that cater to various passions and interests, including travel, reading, family history, financial and legal issues, hiking, and photography.

Interest Groups

  • Armchair Traveler: This group organizes virtual travel experiences, allowing members to share in travel highlights from around the world.
  • Book Clubs: There are two book clubs, both hosting monthly discussions on a wide range of literary works.
  • Family History: Aids members in preserving family stories and exploring genealogy.
  • Financial & Legal Issues Group: Offers support in navigating financial and legal matters relevant to retirees.
  • Hiking Club: Organizes hikes in the Twin Cities and nearby state parks to promote outdoor activity.
  • Photo Club: Encourages photography enthusiasts to share their work and learn from each other.

Programs and Events

UMRA hosts organization-wide events monthly during the academic year. These may include forums, workshops, and themed gatherings. Some notable events include the Earth Day celebrations and Living Well Workshops, which focus on topics relevant to retirees' well-being and community engagement.

Governance and Membership

The association is governed by a board of directors and officers who are elected by the membership. It welcomes all retired staff and faculty from the University of Minnesota to join and participate in its activities.

Overall, UMRA serves as a vital connection for retirees, providing a framework for personal growth, social interaction, and continued involvement with the academic community.
