Tuckahoe Woman's Club

The Tuckahoe Woman's Club is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization founded in February 1936 by Mrs. Thomas J. Starke and Mrs. W. Ambrose McGee Jr.[1][5]. Initially, the club was formed in Mrs. Starke's home with an invitation extended to twenty-four women. Mrs. Starke was elected as the first president of the club[1][5].

History and Purpose

The Tuckahoe Woman's Club was established to provide diverse, educational, challenging, and entertaining programs and activities for its members[2]. Over the years, it has grown from twenty-six charter members to nearly 1,700 members[1]. The club's early focus included community activities and fundraising, particularly during World War II when members supported war efforts by buying and selling war bonds, planting victory gardens, and aiding the military and their families[1].

Community Involvement

The club has been involved in numerous community activities, including support for local charities and organizations. It annually hosts an Art Exhibition and awards scholarships to local high school students from its Scholarship Endowment Fund[2].

Facilities and Events

The club's permanent home was established in 1954, featuring an auditorium, reception room, kitchen, and garden[2]. The facility has undergone updates and is a popular venue for weddings, receptions, and corporate events[2]. Recent programs include events featuring renowned speakers such as Juju Chang and Don Piper, focusing on themes like human connection and resilience[2].

Development and Legacy

In 2011, the club celebrated its 75th anniversary with events honoring its history and members[1]. The "Pave the Way to The Tuckahoe" campaign, introduced in 2012, allows members to purchase inscribed bricks to honor or memorialize loved ones[1]. The club continues to evolve under the leadership of its Board of Governors and member participation[1].
