#HumansOfAIDB Meet Meeka Rutland, Dorm Program Supervisor at AIDB Alabama School for the Deaf - ASD Silent Warriors. For Meeka, ASD isn’t just where she works—it’s where she grew up. As the Dorm Program Supervisor for the girls’ dorms, Meeka spends her days supporting RAs and helping students. “I know how the students feel because I’ve been in their shoes,” Meeka says. “Living away from home can be hard, but it also helps shape you. I’m thankful I get to walk alongside them in this journey.” Meeka’s roots at ASD run deep. She was a student here, and in 2018, she was inducted into the ASD Hall of Fame for her time as a standout volleyball and basketball player. Two people who made a big impact on her life were former Athletic Director Don Hackney and Francis Roberts, a math teacher. “They believed in me. They led by example. That’s the kind of influence I try to be for our students now.” As a Dorm Program Supervisor, Meeka is grateful for the chance to invest in young lives. “Whether it’s sports, academics, or whatever they dream about—I want them to know they can do it.” And she always goes back to one decision that changed everything: “I’m so thankful my parents enrolled me at ASD when I was 5 years old. That one choice led me to where I am today.” #HumansOfAIDB is our way of showcasing the people who help make AIDB #DeafBlindLimitless! Follow along as we meet people from around AIDB's programs who transform the lives of those we serve beyond all expectations! (fb)
